A Day in the Life of Nine House Rabbits

People often ask how we manage nine rabbits. The short answer is routine. Here is what a typical day looks like at our house, from hay to nail trims.

Free-roaming inside, playing outside

Our rabbits free-roam inside the house, and they play outside during the day. Having room to run, hop and explore is one of the biggest reasons they stay happy and active. If you are thinking about letting your own rabbit roam, start with our guide to bunny-proofing your home.

What they eat

The foundation of every day is fresh Timothy hay. Alongside it, our rabbits eat Oxbow Garden Select non-GMO pellets, plus greens. Fresh and dried flowers are treats. We keep fruit and vegetables limited, because too many sugary or starchy foods can upset a rabbit’s gut and lead to stasis.

If you are ever unsure about a food, check it first. Our Safe Foods Checker lists what is safe, what to limit and what to avoid, and our Rabbit Diet 101 guide explains the whole plate. You can also grab the free printable cheat sheet for your fridge.

Grooming and nail trims

We groom our rabbits and trim their nails ourselves. Regular brushing helps with shedding, and short nails keep their feet comfortable. If you have never trimmed a rabbit’s nails, ask your rabbit-savvy vet to show you the first time.

Keeping busy minds busy

Rabbits get bored, and a bored rabbit finds its own entertainment. We make box forts for them to hop in and out of, offer apple wood to chew, and bake homemade Timothy hay treats. None of it is fancy, and they love every bit.

The takeaway

A good rabbit day is simple: lots of hay, a little variety, room to move, and plenty of things to chew and explore. You do not need a nine-rabbit household to give your bunny the same.

General care information, not veterinary advice. If your rabbit seems unwell, call a vet who treats rabbits.
